Tuesday, February 26th, began with a cool overcast morning as I boarded Amtrak San Joaquins #711 from Bakersfield to Martinez. With a smooth “swish,” the BiLevel train doors opened, welcoming travelers aboard. Tuesdays are generally a light travel day, and only about 30 passengers joined at Bakersfield, though I expected Fresno and Stockton to be busier. After snapping a few photos of the lower-level seating, designed for passengers needing easier access, I settled into a spacious upper-level seat with a center table—the perfect spot for the ride ahead.
Shortly after departure, the conductor greeted us and checked tickets, reminding passengers to check out the Cafe Car. I made my way there, eager for my go-to San Joaquins breakfast: a Jimmy Dean sausage muffin, sweet roll, and a steaming cup of Peerless Coffee. With my meal in hand, I returned to my seat and enjoyed the peaceful rhythm of the train at 70 miles per hour, watching the cityscape fade into farmland. The gentle sway of the train made for the perfect setting for a quick, relaxing nap—something you definitely can’t do in a car!
As we passed through Stockton and into the California Delta, I captured a few scenic videos before arriving in Martinez, a charming historic town. After a short walk from the station, we found ourselves at Copper Skillet Café, a cozy diner serving a delicious home-cooked breakfast. From there, we strolled along Shoreline Park’s picturesque nature paths and visited the town’s historical museum, where knowledgeable docents shared fascinating insights.
Our final stop before heading home was the “Antique Corner,” a two-story treasure trove of vintage goods from years gone by. There, I browsed through old books, railroad memorabilia, and beautifully restored furniture. To wrap up the day, we enjoyed a refreshing drink and savory chicken wings at Hillside Tap Room, a stone’s throw away from the station. Our return trip on San Joaquins #716 arrived, and we settled in for a relaxing ride back to Bakersfield, complete with a snack from the Café Car, a card game, and another quick nap. A perfect way to end a memorable Amtrakcation.
