Historic Allensworth

Explore Allensworth State Park: A Step into California’s Rich History

Allensworth State Park, located in California’s San Joaquin Valley, offers a unique glimpse into the past. This historic site preserves the story of Allensworth, the first town in California founded, built, and governed by African Americans. Founded in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allensworth, a former enslaved man, the town was designed to be a self-sustaining community where African Americans could live, work, and thrive.

While the town faced challenges, including water shortages, Allensworth remains a symbol of hope and resilience. Today, visitors can explore the park’s restored buildings, including the Allensworth School, Colonel Allensworth’s home, and other historic structures, bringing to life the story of a community that once flourished in the early 20th century.

Whether you're a history buff or simply looking to explore something unique, Allensworth State Park offers a fascinating and educational experience for visitors of all ages. Don’t miss the opportunity to step back in time and discover the legacy of this remarkable town.
